Statement of Intent
My theme is Texture of nature and I aspire to develop a website to show my photos and ideas that allow me to be widely creative. Using nature I can find unique plants and flowers to photograph and further develop my work. I will also look at some man made textures like metal, chains and cars, this will give a positive contrast to nature and give a more broader range of textures to explore. Among the ways I will design my website is by using textures to display the patterns in objects. I hope to also expand my knowledge and ideas about my theme, and reflect on ideas that may be useful in the future.
As a way to achieve high quality photographs and to gain inspiration, I would like to look at photographers who specialize in textures. Kristina Blokhin stands out to me as a photographer because she takes images of nature such as bright flowers, trees, plants, landscapes and even some man made textures like kettles, window on a daily basis, and then further develops them in photoshop. Additionally, I would benefit from her work since it motivates me to take pictures of texture. As someone who enjoys exploring and discovering unique things, I find this concept intriguing as nature is something we don’t appreciate enough. Another photographer whose work I enjoyed looking at was Ms. Djordjevic. She takes pictures of nature zoomed in close to show a specific part, which is what I am inspired to do. She also teaches photography to other students which only increases her experience.
For this topic I used mood boards and mind maps as a good starting point and developed a plan for my future photo shoots so that I don't run into any problems during the actual shoots. There are many ways I can do the texture project, but I want to focus on the texture in nature because I find it quite intriguing and interesting. I could try to take flowers in black and white but also in color to give them a mysterious effect. The images I would take would be flowers, fruit trees, plants and water.
To show further progress I will start taking more photos outside of school and add them to my Weebly. I can further develop these photos by editing them in Photoshop to make them more professional. I would love to travel around Manchester and try to have a wider range of photos to further improve my photography website and skills. I have some ideas about what kind of photography I want to take and develop further. My next steps are to keep taking photos/ studio shots outside of school but also try to take as many as possible at school. I’m also going to go to Padley Gorge where I can take more photos focusing on developing my skills on manual setting on camera.
I'll experiment with my phone camera, taking photos when I see something interesting and using effects to enhance my images. At school I can use the manual Canon DSLR camera that I was taught and make adjustments. I can also try using Photoshop or Photopea more and use the tutorials provided for me and experiment with the filters to adjust specific layers. This is my first photography project and I will be learning how to use many different types of equipment.
I would like to spend four months on this texture project and show progress by adding all my photos to Weebly and seeing my photos improve. I also like to develop and refine ideas in Photopea/Photoshop, focusing on a specific range of flowers and natural textures. For my final work portfolio I want to take all my best photos and add them to my final gallery so I can show my best photos in one place.
I hope to learn some photography and camera skills. As I work I will be tagging my ideas and designs, which will help me look back on my work and figure out what I can do next to improve. I will always ask my peers and my teacher for advice and feedback to keep improving my work. I will always do my best and photograph to the best of my ability. To develop my work with Photoshop I will use tutorials and demonstrations to increase my knowledge and work better, I will try to develop my skills. After my last portfolio on the subject, I'm going to go through all of my work from the beginning and reflect on it to see what I would do differently next time.

Edward Weston
Composition
In my opinion, Edward Weston has cleverly used his resources to the fullest, he may have had to take this image using a tripod as the image is quite dark and so the camera would have had a slow shutter speed. The iso and white balance would have had to be set manually and he would have to adjust it for the studio setting. Edward Weston has made the picture appear more dramatic by having the black background, which contrasts with the white of the cabbage and so makes it stand out. I can see that he has used an infinity curve, it looks to be a shallow depth field as you cannot see anything in the background and so your eye can only focus on the cabbage and the texture of the leaves. The softly lit lighting creates a subtle effect on the picture making the veins appear more magnified and more projected to the viewer. This is a studio shot and I can see that he would have placed the lights on the top right hand side as we can see a highlight on the top of the cabbage and darker shadows on the left hand side, this helps to bring out the texture of the object. The image is taken at eye level which helps the viewer see all of the Texture and patterns on the leaf and makes you connect with the photograph. The photographer has used the rule of thirds as the curved stem is in the top right section of the image, the ‘sweet spot’. This draws your eye to this spot and then the strong leading lines of the veins pull your eye down to the bottom left hand corner. The photographer seems to have been trying to achieve a line of symmetry which was slightly obtained from the sense of direction. The shadows around that particular area also cause it to emphasise the veins along the cabbage leaf more and the areas around it making it all the more intriguing. The photograph has been tightly cropped, making the cabbage close to the picture plane and makes you feel that you could reach out and touch it.
Context
"Edward Henry Weston was born March 24, 1886, in Highland Park, Illinois. He spent the majority of his childhood in Chicago where he attended Oakland Grammar School. He began photographing at the age of sixteen after receiving a Bull’s Eye #2 camera from his father. Weston’s first photographs captured the parks of Chicago and his aunt’s farm. In 1906, following the publication of his first photograph in Camera and Darkroom, Weston moved to California. After working briefly as a surveyor for San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, he began working as an itinerant photographer. He peddled his wares door to door photographing children, pets and funerals. Realizing the need for formal training, in 1908 Weston returned east and attended the Illinois College of Photography in Effingham, Illinois. He completed the 12-month course in six months and returned to California. Weston began experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in 1946 and in 1948 shot his last photograph of Point Lobos. In 1946 the Museum of Modern Art, New York featured a major retrospective of 300 prints of Weston’s work. Over the next 10 years of progressively incapacitating illness, Weston supervised the printing of his prints by his sons, Brett and Cole. His 50th Anniversary Portfolio was published in 1952 with photographs printed by Brett. An even larger printing project took place between1952 and 1955. Brett printed what was known as the Project Prints. A series of 8 -10 prints from 832 negatives considered Edward’s lifetime best. The Smithsonian Institution held the show, “The World of Edward Weston” in 1956 paying tribute to his remarkable accomplishments in American photography. Edward Weston died on January 1, 1958 at his home, Wildcat Hill, in Carmel, California. Weston’s ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Pebbly Beach at Point Lobos."

Connection
I personally don't think there was a message to the picture but I really like the way the picture was taken, Edward Weston made sure that every thing he could've used was done professionally, he used the white balance, iso, eye view, backgrounds. You can tell that this picture was professional and the photographer used all his resources. It doesn't relate as much to my research but there are some pictures that are positioned in the same way, angle or lighting. I can use the techniques that the photographer has as this could inspire me when I take my images and the settings that I use. Instead of using color for all of my photos I can try doing more photos in black and white. I like the way the photographer has cropped in tightly to give it a feel of the cabbage being much closer to the lens and just almost being able to touch it. The reason why this photo was chosen was because the photographer focuses on texture which is what we are focusing on in lesson.
Comment
I think there wasn't much of a meaning behind the work, it was mostly just a picture taken of an object. The strengths of this picture is that there were multiple different techniques used, there aren't any weaknesses in the photos I think the photographer used all the resources he could've during that time. The darkness of the image makes it look better because it gives it an almost mysterious effect. Looking at some of the other pictures of Edward Weston but this certain image gives more of a mysterious effect and makes his overall work look nicer. I can use this image as inspiration to make my images better and use more techniques.
Kristina Blokhin
Composition
The photographer of the images, Kristina Blokhin has cleverly used the rule of thirds, the corners of the flower each hit a sweet spot and all the more make the image look a lot more interesting as it captivates the viewer. As the flower on the foreground is only on the left, it means that the viewer instantly looks to the bottom left, at the midground the same affect as the foreground is obtained as most of the flower is on the left side. The background is of the blue sky with hints of white cloud which creates an overall uplifting field. The picture's exposure has been perfectly adjusted; it's neither overexposed or underexposed. In order to maintain the desired appearance, the photographer did this by modifying the white balance and ISO. The photographer was able to produce a captivating impression that compels the viewer to look thoroughly and immerse themselves in the textures of the flower. The sun, a natural light source also known as ambient light, provides lighting that illuminates every petal of the flower. Despite not being the main subject of the picture, the background clouds' highlights can still be seen, demonstrating the skill of the photographer who carefully made adjustments for the background to be highlighted. Although the texture of the image looks to be soft and smooth, the centre is harsh and irregular. The pattern appears to be almost thin and rounded inward like a disc when observing the image's shape. Since yellow is connected with happiness, the flower provides the picture a warm golden tone that uplifts the reader. Given that the depth of field is so shallow, it nearly appears as though you could reach out and touch it, I believe the image encouraged me to look closely and reflect on the many camera settings the photographer utilised. I believe the photographer made the most of her resources to create professional and interesting shots.

Connnection
This connects to my work because I would like to make my main focus of pictures on nature like plants, flowers and leaves. I can take this as inspiration as she has used different camera settings in order to make the picture look as professional and intriguing as possible. Kristina Blokhin has used her resources to the fullest and made it so that it makes the viewer focus and follow into the little details. I can use these same techniques, focusing on the main object blocking out the background by blurring it, making sure there isn't any blurriness on the actual object that is the main focus.
COMMENT
I really like this picture as it gives an insight on the photographer as a free, adventurous and daring photographer who is somewhat what I inspire to be. There could be multiple meanings, to show happiness, flowing in the air the petals in the natural light, the strengths of this photo is the natural lighting, the iso and white balance all of which has been changed to fit the focus and make the flower stand out more. This certain image of Kristina Blockhin focuses on texture zooming in mostly towards the sunflower, this could've been improved in my opinion by making the background a bit more fascinating, this could have been done by adding a bed of sunflowers in the background but being blurred out.
Sandra Bartocha
Context
"Sandra Bartocha (1980) is a German freelance photographer and author specializing in natural landscapes, forests and plants as well as abstract work, with the specific aim of creating images that evoke an emotional response. The beauty of nature and natural light is a great source of inspiration to Sandra. She tries to photograph nature in an artistic way rather than trying to document it, focusing on details, light, colors and moods and using creative camera techniques to capture the beauty of a scene in the best way. Sandra is vice president of the Society of German Nature Photographers (GDT) and is chief editor of the magazine GDT Forum Naturfotografie. Her pictures have been published in European magazines, several coffee table and how-to books, as well as calendars. She travelled all over Europe to show her audiovisual presentations Rhythm of Nature & LYS and has presented her more artistic work in numerous exhibitions. Her images have received prizes in numerous international competitions – including the International Photography Awards, European Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Asferico, Biophoto and the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2016. She was one of the photographic team on the pan-European Wild Wonders of Europe initiative and has been working on a long-term project about the north of Europe – LYS. As a result she produced a 45min audiovisual show as well as a large coffee table book LYS – An Intimate Journey to the North. Recent projects include regional work in northern Germany as well as a new long-term project about tree species."

Composition
In this landscape photograph, the foreground is made up of ferns, trees, and leaves. The middle ground is made up of the centre leaves, where the colour develops into a little lighter before the vertically arranged trees. The trees on the side appear to be framing the image, looming over the leaves, while the distant trees contain a soft grey that virtually resembles fog. This gives the image a deep depth of field. The leading line is depicted in Sandra Bartocha's shot as the ferns in front of the tree that are forming it into a triangle, which is where the vanishing point lies. I personally believe that there is a rule of thirds in the image; each third is a distinct shade of colour, with the trees, ferns, and leaves on the left side. The delicate hues and tints make it evident that the time of day is early, and the lighting makes it appear to be close to golden hour. According to my research the shot was not edited in Photoshop; instead, it was taken by adjusting the lens and exposure. The texture of the trees and the way the green ferns contrast with the orange fall leaves are two patterns and forms that are highly obvious in the image and direct the viewer's attention to the area in front of the dark right-handed tree. The ferns' intense shades of dark brown and orange stand out dramatically against the bursts of green in their leaves and branches. It is clear that the lighting is ambient because the picture was taken outside in a forest. Bartocha's image was not shot from above or below, indicating that the camera angle was at eye level. It appears as though you could walk right into the picture, which is nearly lifelike as though it were taken from a work of fiction or a story.
Comment
I am quite fond of Kristina Blokhin photos as I believe they have many strengths, the main aspects they have are usually of nature. This specific photo is a landscape of nature, fairly simple with a natural landscape that can be described as quite feminine. In my opinion, I think Sandra Bartocha has used professionalism to improve this photo to the best of it's ability so that you can understand the picture, feel the textures. The colours contrast greatly, the green ferns and the autumn leaves, the image is quite simple but it is classed as naturally beautiful. It's a western wood and it consists of trees, ferns and leaves.
Connection
It is quite evident that this photo is landscape as it has that essence, it links directly to my work because of the nature and that one of the trips that I went to consisted of going into the woods (Padley Gorge) I inspire to create similar outcomes, as it captures the tranquility and peacefulness, it's almost as if it's inviting you in. The picture gives a warm feeling because of the colours specifically the oranges of the autumn leaves, its almost as if the photo is out of a magical fairytale book and you can step into it. The landscape is western as it's a picture of woods and can be found anywhere. Techniques that inspire me would be cropping and rule of thirds which is what I would like to focus on.

Shell and Leaves
Best and Worst
I think this is my best image because your attention first goes to the shell and that's because of the background being blurred out, it gives a bit of a faded look and makes the pictures look better.
|
I think this is my worst image because you can't see anything properly because of the position of the camera and also because of the lighting. The shells aren't visible either because of the angle the photo was taken.
|
Shells
Best and Worst
I think this is best my picture because of the way the shell is placed so that the sun reflect off it and the shadow is a bit visible too. I also focused it and made the background blurry so that your focus goes straight to the shell.

I think this is my worst picture because it came out very blurry, so it looks very rushed and unprofessional. The lighting is also not the best and makes it look terrible.

This is my worst image because it's blurry and the lighting isn't good either, I could've improved this by changing the white balance and moving the focus dial.
|
Pineapple
Best and Worst
In my opinion, this is my best photo because of the way it catches your eye. I also like it because of the lighting towards the bottom also looking like a sunset.
|
This is my worst image because it's too dark to see the pineapple clearly, I could've made this photo better by changing the white balance so that the lighting would've been better.
|
Lettuce
Best and Worst
In my opinion, this is my best image because of the lighting and the positioning of the camera, it catches your eye and it looks as if the cabbage leaves are surrounding the middle.
|
This is my worst image because it's too dark too see anything properly, I could've made this better by changing the white balance and the iso so that it wasn't as dark.
|
Broccoli
Best and Worst
In my opinion, this is my best image because it looks as if the broccoli is surrounding the camera and it looks really nice as it gives a bit of an effect and let's you see the texture.
|
This is my worst image because it's a bit too dark and blurry. I could've changed this by changing the focus dial and changing the white balance and iso.
|
Apples
Best and Worst
In my opinion, this is my best image because of the contrast of the red and black and also because of the lighting. The reflective lighting on the apple gives it a bit of a dark and mysterious look.
|
This is my worst image because it isn't bright enough to see anything, it's underexposed. I could've improved this image by changing the iso to a higher setting.

Shoot Plan
My theme is Texture and I want to have my main focus on natural textures, I've taken my inspiration from Sandra Bartocha who has amazing photos focusing more on natural landscapes, her work intrigues me, the nature aspects especially. I won't have a model as I plan on doing outdoor landscape photos, however, this is a school trip so I have to be sure that no one gets into the frames. The equipment I am using is a Canon DSLR camera which is just going to be on fast shutter speed and auto ISO and White Balance. In some places, I may be using the flash of my phone to get better lighting depending on the location. In order to get more photos, I'll make sure I have a spare battery and in case of needing more space, I'll take a spare memory card. The time of day is quite in the morning, so that instead of artificial light, more natural light is used giving it a better view of the images. I hope to catch a few images of the same thing in order to make better galleries and I will constantly look at my photos so I can see what I need to improve.
|
Trees
Best and Worst
I think this my best photo because of the composition of the image, I have positioned the camera so that there was one tree on the right and on the left the forest was there.

REFINING MY FINAL IDEAS
Throughout this project, I tried plenty of different ideas in my Photoshop and I decided to go along with doing patterns. I chose this because I was very fond of how the natural photographs I took looked with different patterns combining the natural pattern and how I changed the photograph. The idea I chose to go forward with it was to choose a photo, put it into photoshop, copy and paste images till they come in the middle. I really like this technique because it's quite straightforward and makes your photos look good.

EVALUATION
My main theme was different textures, focusing more on the natural side, I explored the different types of flowers and plants. I thought this was a fun theme because I was able to spend time outside of school taking pictures of nature and getting pictures at different times of the day to see which made it look better. This theme allowed me to be creative by taking captivating images that lures the persons eyes to the image.
In photography, I found going to Padley Gorge and taking pictures of textures the most interesting because it allowed me to be in a different setting widening my , have control over what I'm able to take photos of and this also allowed me to apply the skills I learnt in real life. This is something I really enjoy because it let me put my skills to a test and also improve my skills by taking loads of pictures.
I learnt a lot of new skills such as building a whole website which is a skill that can be used in the future for personal reasons. I have also learnt lots of different photoshop skills by following tutorials and making my work better, copy and pasting layers, blur tool and the kaleidoscope effect. I learnt a lot on how to use a camera and changing the settings to refine your image and make it a lot better, I can do that by changing the WB, ISO, aperture and using different settings like manual and Tv for moving objects like the water at Padley Gorge.
I would like to further develop my skills in Photoshop as there are many more ways to be making my images a lot better, making my images more fascinating and interesting. They can be improved by removing shadows, reflections and people in the background. For my next project I would like to learn about lighting and how it can change on image, the impact it has, how it can make my image better. This will allow me to take photos similar to ones we did with the professional photographer using a light and a reflector.
Throughout the project I had to research photographers who also did a project on texture or if their work revolved around nature. An example would be Edward Henry Weston who was a photographer in 20th century America, he was said to be innovative, influential and "one of the masters of 20th century photography". Another photographer that I researched was Sandra Bartocha who is a freelance photographer that mainly specializes in natural landscapes, and abstract work to create an emotional response for the viewer.
These photographers influenced my work as I used their work to make mine a lot better, their work inspired me to try different skills. My work links a lot to theirs because of the natural aspect that I chose to focus on, nature generally interests me and evokes a response of happiness which is what I inspire to do for others looking at photographs.
I also really enjoyed my work in Photoshop, this was because I had a lot of freedom to try new skills and see what looked best for my photograph. This is because it improved my photos a lot more and I got to work side by side with tutorials so that I didn't make and mistakes on my images. The best tutorial I watched was the one on geometric designs, the design really captured my eye and interests me.
The most successful part of my work would be the amount of different skills I learnt during this project, not only did I learn to take photographs and changing camera settings, I also learnt how to create professional websites and use different applications such as Photoshop and Photopea.
Problems I encountered in this project would be not being able to go to places and explore more by taking photographs, the covid pandemic kind of restricted me from doing that. To overcome this I looked for a lot more places that would allow me to take photographs and explore impressive spots for photo shoots. Another problem I faced was being absent from school and missing almost a month of work which was a big problem and I wasn't able to catch up.
I learnt a lot as a class and working alone or with a partner, I learnt the camera skills on manual and Tv with Miss Kidd and tried my best to support that by reading up at home on how to make your photos better with a manual camera. I learnt alone on Photoshop by following tutorials which taught me a lot of different skills to improve my photos a lot more.
If I could complete this project I would expand my work by taking photographs of a lot more things and with different props, I also would have worked a lot more independently at home and organize some shoots away from home. Not only would that increase the quantity but also the quality which is a lot more important in my opinion, I also need to manage my time a lot better to make sure I'm getting the best of my work.
